Exclusive Clean Hydrogen Partnership column: Trucks are a perfectly viable transport segment for fuel cells

Heavy-duty vehicles, such as trucks, coaches and buses, are responsible for about a quarter of CO2 emissions from road transport in the EU and for some 6% of total EU emissions. Despite some improvements in fuel consumption efficiency in recent years, these emissions are still rising, mainly due to increasing road freight traffic.

Overall emissions from transport need to decrease by 90% in order for the EU to accomplish climate-neutrality by 2050. For the heavy-duty transport sector only, EU carbon targets require a 15% reduction by 2025 and at least a 30% reduction by 2030.

As policy makers and the general public pushed for lower carbon solutions, and at the same time fuel cells and hydrogen applications lowered their costs while increasing performance, hydrogen gradually moved into the focus of transport policy. The Green Deal, the hydrogen strategy and the Fit for 55 initiatives are now a driving force for the deployment of low emission vehicles, fuels, and related infrastructure. Consequently, over the past few years the transport sector has witnessed the introduction and development of different types of hydrogen-powered vehicles: cars, vans, buses, trucks – and their associated infrastructure.

The Clean Hydrogen Partnership is supporting the uptake of fuel cells and hydrogen in the road heavy-duty transport segment, contributing to the transition to a greener mobility system, with the final aim to provide clean, accessible and affordable transport solutions to all Europeans.
