How bp plans to help the UK deliver its hydrogen ambitions

At bp, we believe that hydrogen, alongside other low carbon energy sources such as wind, solar and biofuels, will play a critical role as businesses and governments strive to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

UK Government analysis suggests that 20-35% of the country’s energy consumption by 2050 could be hydrogen-based, underscoring its potential to help the UK reach net zero by mid-century – a view shared by the UK’s independent Climate Change Committee.

The industrial and commercial use of hydrogen energy is still evolving, yet we see low carbon hydrogen as an essential complement to the electrification of energy systems. It has enormous potential for decarbonising some of the most hard-to-abate industries, including transport, where hydrogen provides advantages over battery solutions for heavy duty, long-haul market segments – like aviation, shipping, and heavy goods vehicles.
