Policy pillar: India’s hydrogen supply progress puts spotlight on demand


If anyone was in doubt about the Indian government’s green hydrogen ambitions, early 2025 saw a high-profile attempt from officials to quash any concerns that the energy carrier wasn’t well within their sights.

At India Energy Week (IEW) 2025, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, declared green hydrogen had “arrived” as he reflected on recent government tenders and bids to bolster production and manufacturing.

“It means that the five million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production target for 2030 – which used to be a futuristic talking point – it’s here,” he said. “Along with other countries, we will be very strong on green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel. 2025 is going to be a very important year – we’re seeing 20% blending on biofuels and we’ve broken through the hurdles with green hydrogen.”

The positive message came amid a large degree of progress on hydrogen support from the Indian state. In March, 22,390 crores ($258.84m) in subsidies were awarded to nine companies to support the production of up to 450,000 tonnes per year, through the second Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) auction.
