Tackling the technical barriers to reliable hydrogen refuelling


The road to hydrogen-powered mobility has been anything but smooth over the past few years.

While the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported a sharp slowdown in fuel cell passenger car growth in 2024, from 35% to below 15%, the heavy-duty sector is gaining momentum. Fuel cell truck deployments rose by more than 50% in 2023, making it the fastest-growing segment of hydrogen mobility¹.

This shift in focus is reflected in global infrastructure trends. Nearly 1,200 hydrogen refuelling stations are now in operation worldwide1, however, growth in the total number of stations was marginal in 2023, as new openings were partially offset by closures.
