Utilising existing industries to drive hydrogen fuel cells forward: Bramble Energy speaks to H2 View

Having spun off from Imperial College London and University College London (UCL) in 2016, Bramble Energy set out to tackle the issue of expensive fuel cells in the hope of unlocking widespread hydrogen-powered applications.

“The real stumbling block with fuel cells is that they’re way too expensive,” Vidal Bharath, Chief Commercial Officer at Bramble Energy told H2 View. “Metal and graphite plate fuel cell tech is not comparable with diesel, and consequently they would end up in niche applications.”

The need for economies of scale is often discussed across the hydrogen industry, however, costs associated with setting up large-scale manufacturing facilities and establishing supply chains, are a well reinforced barrier than remains to be tackled  across the market. Additionally, the nature of the hydrogen molecule being so small means that high precision engineering and manufacturing is required to ensure leakages do not occur. But this is exactly where Bramble is looking to set itself apart from the ever-growing fuel cell crowd.
