$750m South Australia project to implement a 440MW electrolyser for hydrogen production

Southern Australia could become a region rich with hydrogen technologies with Trafigura and the Southern Australian Government unveiling today (Dec 9) a $750m hydrogen project set to be developed at Port Pirie.

The hydrogen project aims to integrate hydrogen technologies at the Nyrstar Port Pirie smelter with the first stage set to implement an 85MW electrolyser to produce hydrogen with a later stage set to scale this to 440MW.

This hydrogen would then be converted into ammonia to be used both for exportation to lucrative foreign markets in addition to being used as fuel for shipping, domestic transport whilst also supporting decarbonisation of domestic industry.
