ABS fuel cell expertise to support SOFC4Maritime project

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) is bringing its fuel cell expertise to a joint development project aimed at accelerating the development of the technology for the decarbonisation of marine vessels.

Dubbed SOFC4Maritime, the consortium targets optimal utilisation of future green fuels via application of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) for power generation om marine vessels.

By joining the group, ABS accompanies the likes of Alfa Laval, DTU Energy, Haldor Topsoe, Svitzer and the Mærsk McKinney Møller Centre for Zero Carbon Shipping.

When based on fuels such as ammonia, hydrogen or bio-methane, SOFCs hold significant potential for reducing the carbon footprint of vessel designs. Such alternatives are needed in the maritime industry, which must transition to greener power over just a few decades.
