Analysis: What do Australia’s new fossil fuel approvals mean for hydrogen?


As the Australian government faces mounting criticism for approving major fossil fuel projects post-election, CIC’s David Green has insisted that hydrogen investment remains secure.

Shortly after Labor’s re-election in May, the Albanese government approved multiple new fossil fuel projects, including Woodside’s North West shelf LNG extension until 2070, coal mine expansions, and new gas exploration areas. The decisions prompted strong public backlash and accusations of “gaslighting” on climate policy.

However, Green, CEO of Climate Impact Corporation (CIC), said demand in Australia and internationally for hydrogen isn’t waning. “It’s already locked in, regardless of whether new coal or gas fields are developed,” he said.
