AST obtains certification for its high-pressure cylinders for hydrogen storage

Advanced Structural Technologies has obtained certification from the US Department of Transport to design and manufacture its cylinder for high-pressure hydrogen gas storage.

The new large diameter hydrogen storage vessels will be sold under the H2-MAX name to signify its unique product characteristics, particularly its faster and complete filling capability.

The new H2-MAX has several key characteristics that makes it stand out above other variants on the market today.

For instance, the new product has the largest diameter Type III cylinder for hydrogen applications in the market, AST has said.

As well as this, the cylinder includes a one-piece aluminium liner than provides superior heat tolerance to extend the cylinders life, has a higher impact tolerance for increase safety whilst additionally having an inherent leak before burst failure mode.

The cylinder has a faster and complete filling process with significant benefits including, efficiency and complete fills in extreme temperatures, reduced fuelling costs whilst also having a more complete fuelling which reduces range anxiety.

In addition to this, the extended life cylinders also do not need replacement after exposure to high temperatures with the product also having surpassed testing requirements to meet maximum cylinder life.
