Ballard Power Systems has hit a significant milestone as the group revealed today (Oct 5) that its proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells have powered vehicles more than 100 million kilometers on the roads globally.
This is a significant figure as, in just 12 months, Ballard has more than doubled its on-road kilometers in service and, with the rate at which it is growing, it highlights the rapid growth of the fuel cell industry in mobility.

Ballard’s fuel cells are said to currently power approximately 3,500 buses and trucks around the world in a dozen countries.
By supporting the global transportation sector to move towards zero-emission technologies, Ballard is accelerating the global effort to tackle greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonise the world.
Randy MacEwen, President and Chief Executive Officer said, “Ballard’s proven in-service experience continues to be a compelling value proposition for our customers as it provides confidence in our technology, product durability, and total cost of ownership.
“Our recent announcement of the 8th generation FCmoveTM-HD+ heavy duty engine, and its significant technological advancements, is illustrative of the continued learnings and technological evolution of our products that directly result from in-field applications.
“Leveraging this knowledge and translating it into technological advancement enables us to maintain industry leadership while improving ease of integration for our customers.
“As Ballard technology continues to see broad reaching adoption and increasing field testing with key industry partners and customers, we are well positioned to continue to play a leading role in the deployment and proliferation of hydrogen fuel cell technologies.”
US DOE, General Motors, Microsoft and Plug Power
What does the US Department of Energy (DOE), General Motors, Microsoft and Plug Power have in common? They’re all speaking at H2 View’s North American Virtual Hydrogen Event in October. Will you be joining us on October 19?
North America is in a prime position to lead efforts in decarbonisation, but it still has great distances to travel. The region has been giving chase in a race to green hydrogen dominated by Europe and Asia-Pacific. If policymakers and industry can work together and take the right steps to realise a hydrogen vision, the region is perfectly placed to expand its global energy leadership at scale and speed.
What lessons can be learned from Europe’s policymakers? What are the challenges to be overcome? What are the strengths and opportunities? How can North America go from giving chase to taking a lead in hydrogen? These are all questions our virtual event will address across H2 View’s four pillars of Mobility, Power, Policy and Technology.
