Ballard to supply fuel cells for ‘first’ hydrogen-powered train in the US

In a US ‘first’, hydrogen-powered trains are set to come into operation, as Ballard Power Systems today (September 26) reveals it has received an order from Stadler Rail for fuel cell engines.

H2 View understands Stadler was awarded a contract to provide the hydrogen-powered train by San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBTCA), with an option of additional trains in the future.

Coming as what the companies are describing as first for the US, the train is  expected to be in service in San Bernardino, California in 2024 and will seat over 100 passengers.
