Bureaucracy blocking European hydrogen ambitions, says trade body


Hydrogen Europe CEO Jorgo Chatzimarkakis has accused the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) of undermining its leadership and sidelining hydrogen in favour of an electricity-only decarbonisation strategy.

Following the 39th European Gas Regulatory Forum (Madrid Forum) last month, Chatzimarkakis described the situation as an “institutional crisis,” warning that current delays and regulatory indecision risk derailing Europe’s climate ambitions.

The CEO highlighted the Commission’s ongoing delay in adopting the Delegated Act on low-carbon fuels, part of the Gas and Hydrogen Package, which has now been pushed beyond initial deadlines outlined in the Clean Industrial Deal (CID) and Clean Steel Action Plan.

“Despite repeated calls for a technology-neutral and pragmatic Delegated Act, no meaningful outcome emerged in the Forum’s conclusions,” Chatzimarkakis said.
