The Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney, has won the Canadian General Election, narrowly beating the Conservatives in a race that came down to the wire – and saw the Conservative leader lose his own seat in Parliament.
As it stands, the Liberals are four seats short of the magic 172 number needed for a majority, while the Conservatives hold 144, making a partnership with smaller parties like the Bloc Québécois or NDP likely.
It was a comeback few could have foreseen. After Justin Trudeau resigned as Liberal Leader and Prime Minister in January, the Conservatives had a commanding 20-point poll lead – a margin many believed insurmountable.
Yet, even in Trudeau’s final weeks, despite his deep unpopularity, the Liberals began clawing back support, buoyed by the government’s firm response to Trump’s tariffs and inflammatory calls for Canada to become the “51st state.”
