Centrica inks £20bn Equinor gas deal with option to switch to hydrogen


UK energy firm Centrica has signed a £20bn ($26.9bn), 10-year deal to import natural gas from Equinor, with an option to switch volumes to hydrogen.

The Norwegian state-owned oil and gas major will supply five billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas per year until 2035, increasing the role of natural gas in the UK, in a market where imports met nearly two-thirds of UK demand in 2024.

However, under the contract, Centrica can replace natural gas sales with hydrogen, “providing further support to the UK’s hydrogen economy.”
