Commission sets 90% 2040 GHG target, hydrogen sector warns on execution


The European Commission has proposed a legally binding  90% net reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to 1990 levels by 2040.

Announced on Wednesday (2 July), the amendment to the European Climate Law is pitched as a pragmatic move to provide long-term clarity for investors and industry, while supporting innovation and strengthening the EU’s energy security.

“Industry and investors look to us to set a predictable direction of travel,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “Today we show that we stand firmly by our commitment to decarbonise [the] European economy by 2050.”
