Data centre growth ‘will need every kind of energy source’


All kinds of energy sources and technologies – and especially gas and renewables – will be needed to meet booming demand from data centres, delegates attending the Qatar Economic Forum heard today.

Markus Krebber, CEO of German energy company RWE, said energy was the “facilitator but also the bottleneck” when it comes to meeting new tech-driven demand.

“We see the US is ahead of the curve and expect power demand to grow by at least 3% to 5% [a year],” he said. “Europe will pick up but a bit later, and slower.”

When it comes to meeting energy demand, he said it needs to be an ‘all on the bus’ strategy.
