Energy Commissioner defends hydrogen amid Liebreich’s economic critique


European Energy Commissioner, Dan Jørgensen, has issued a firm defence of hydrogen’s role in decarbonising European industry, pushing back against growing criticism that the energy technology is unviable.

In a discussion on energy analyst Michael Liebreich’s Cleaning Up Podcast, Jørgensen acknowledged the financial and technical challenges facing green hydrogen but insisted that political intervention was required for any new energy technology.

“If I had listened to advisors, journalists, and civil servants in my career, stating that about many new technologies, then Denmark would not have put an end date to the production of fossil fuels,” he said, recalling scepticism during early offshore wind developments.
