Essar Oil has commissioned the UK’s first ‘hydrogen-ready’ furnace at its Stanlow refinery, which will initially run on refinery off-gas until blue hydrogen becomes available in 2028.
EET Fuels said it had completed the connection of the furnace into its Stanlow refinery system in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, after receiving the equipment in 2022.
The new furnace, which is replacing three non-hydrogen compatible systems, will be able to run on 100% hydrogen, 100% refinery off-gas, or a blend of the two.
It will heat crude oil and other inputs for fractionation and further refining into fuels and petrochemical products. It is expected to consume around 10% of the refinery’s total energy usage.
