Exclusive: Cepsa’s ‘natural move’ to hydrogen

H2 View has been told that hydrogen was a “natural move” for Spanish energy firm Cepsa, during an interview with the company’s Director of Commercial and Clean Energies, Carlos Barrasa at the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam.

“For us, it was a natural move because we are a leading supplier of bunkering and other conventional fuels to heavy transport and industrial customers and want to lead the supply of renewable fuels to those difficult to electrify sectors…so it was an obvious choice to invest in hydrogen ,” Barrasa told H2 View. “If we want to accompany our customers on their journey to decarbonisation, we have to get on this path.”

Last December (2022), the company announced it would invest over €3bn ($3.2bn) to create Europe’s ‘largest’ green hydrogen hub, revealing plans to establish 2GW of production capacity in southern Spain.
