ExxonMobil secures 250,000 tonne blue ammonia offtake deal with Marubeni

ExxonMobil has signed a long-term offtake agreement to supply 250,000 tonnes of hydrogen-based ammonia to Japan’s Marubeni Corporation.

The blue ammonia will be supplied to Kobe Power Plant in Hyogo prefecture, Japan, operated by a fully owned subsidiary of Kobe Steel. From 2030, the plant aims to co-fire low-carbon ammonia with existing fuel to reduce CO2 emissions.

Additionally, Marubeni will acquire an equity stake in ExxonMobil’s Baytown, Texas, ammonia facility, from which the 250,000 tonnes will be supplied. Once operational in 2029, the plant could produce up to one billion feet of hydrogen, equivalent to more than one million tonnes of blue ammonia.
