First large-scale trial of hydrogen-powered construction equipment completed in UK


A successful trial has demonstrated the safe and effective use of JCB hydrogen-powered construction machinery and mobile refuelling for the Lower Thames Crossing project.

Located at the Gallagher’s Hermitage Quarry in Kent, the trial used a JCB 540-180H Loadall powered by a hydrogen combustion engine “fuelled with low-carbon hydrogen” provided by Ryze Power.

National Highways reported that the trial saved around 205kg of CO2 per machine, per week, when compared to traditional diesel-fuelled equivalents.

H2 View understands that this is the first time hydrogen combustion-powered construction machinery has been trialled on this scale in the UK.
