In an Australian first, iron ore producer Fortescue Metals will soon transport its workers in the Pilbara region of Western Australia with hydrogen-powered buses.
As part of a $32m project, 10 coaches fuelled with renewable hydrogen will replace the existing fleet of diesel coaches at Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mine.
Gas and engineering firm BOC South Pacific today announced it was joining the project and will supply ITM electrolysers and a hydrogen station at the site in the Pilbara.
The electrolysers are expected to produce 180kg of renewable hydrogen per day through electrolysis, enough to power the 10 coaches carrying 3,000 workers to and from the mine site every day.
