Germany’s hydrogen funding to be cut by a third under budget plans


Commercial realism and policy aspirations are set for a collision course in Germany where the new government’s draft budget spending plans see funding for hydrogen falling by a third.

The coalition government had pledged to embrace “all hydrogen colours” in April, but now the industry’s outlook looks less bright.

Financing for industrial decarbonisation is set to be cut to less than €2bn in the medium term from a prior €24.5bn.

The plans neglect urgently needed investments in a sustainable and resilient energy system, said industry association BDEW.
