Gold H2 eyes $0.5/kg after first hydrogen production using microbes in old oil wells

Texan start-up Gold H2 has produced its first hydrogen molecules from a process using microbes to stimulate generation in old oil wells, which it claims could pave the way to commercial production at $0.5/kg.

The Houston-based firm carried out its first field trial of its black-to-gold biotechnology in an old oil field in California’s San Joaquin Basin, where it achieved 400,000 ppm of hydrogen in produced gases, equating to 40% of the gas stream.

It remains unclear what other gases were present, whether separation is required, and how by-products would be managed. H2 View has contacted Gold H2 for confirmation.
