‘Green’ hydrogen: looking beyond the ‘wrong’ debate to reveal a genuine opportunity to tackle climate change

If 2020 was defined by the global pandemic, and 2021 by our adjustment to the “new normal”, then 2022 – yet another tumultuous year – has surely been defined by renewed instability, brought on by Russia’s terrible war in Ukraine.

Through both the change and disruption of the past few years, one theme has remained constant: the need to tackle climate change – maintain focus on achieving this goal and safeguard the future of our planet for the next generation.

“Green” hydrogen and the promise for this fuel to play a significant role in tackling climate change globally, has been ever present in recent decarbonisation discussions. However, in my view, the question over whether “green” hydrogen can live up to the “hype” is the wrong debate to be having.

By looking at “green” hydrogen through the lens of the Gartner “hype cycle”, I believe we not only get a more accurate picture of how this space has evolved in recent times, we get a more realistic view of what the future might hold too.
