The global hydrogen industry is stronger than ever before, and the market has realised that hydrogen is the most efficient zero-emission energy alternative, says Hexagon Purus President Dr. Michael Kleschinski in an interview with H2 View.
Hexagon Purus is a recently launched business unit as part of the Hexagon Composites ASA group, a member of the Hydrogen Council and a clean energy storage and distribution technologist.
Headquartered in Aalesund, Norway but largely based out of Kassel in Germany and Lincoln, Nebraska in the US, Hexagon Purus is home to the group’s global hydrogen activities and focuses on the development, production and sale of lightweight composite, high pressure tanks and systems for the storage and distribution of compressed gases – in particular hydrogen, natural gas and biogas.
Its systems are applied to various applications in the hydrogen space, such as light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, gas distribution, mobile refuelling, ground storage, marine and rail, as well as back-up power solutions.
Lightweight high-pressure storage tanks are an essential part within the hydrogen value chain and the Hexagon Purus product range that continues to be adapted and developed, according to Dr. Kleschinski.
“Hexagon Purus is well positioned across the entire supply chain with tanks for passenger cars, trucks, buses, ground storage, transportation, marine, rail and back-up power solutions,” he said.
“We are continuously adapting our leading technology to a wide range of applications to develop products for the various requirements within the hydrogen economy. Through the lightweight design of our composite cylinders and systems, we help our customers to minimise their operational costs and at the same time reducing environmental footprint.”
“I am convinced [Hexagon has a fundamental role to play in the hydrogen economy]. The importance of high pressure hydrogen storage systems is undisputed. Our product portfolio, track record, global footprint and corporate vision make us the ideal partner of today’s and future market players. We have invested a lot in technology and we will continue to do so.”
“We have the clear strategy to provide the market with the products and solutions it requires to change to the hydrogen economy.”
And Hexagon Purus believes there is not only momentum right now in the hydrogen economy, but that it is stronger than ever.
“Despite some challenges and obstacles that still must be overcome, we notice a very positive development in the industry. The global hydrogen industry is stronger than ever!” Dr. Kleschinski enthused. “Many large companies have entered into the hydrogen market and numerous governments are initiating supporting programmes. The market has gradually realised that for heavier applications and long distances, hydrogen is the most efficient zero-emission alternative.”
“Bodies like the Hydrogen Council are supporting the commercialisation of hydrogen through appropriate policies and supporting schemes, to acknowledge hydrogen as key element of the energy transition. More and more hydrogen conferences and exhibitions have been taking place all over the world and hydrogen has been a key topic on the agenda of numerous global forums such as the G20 in Japan.”
The Hexagon group is itself a member of the Hydrogen Council and firmly believes in being part of a global commitment to an ever-pressing cause.
“Being part of the Hydrogen Council enables us to work closely with the leading industry players to further enhance hydrogen globally,” Dr. Kleschinski said. “Our membership truly demonstrates our strong commitment to accelerating the market for hydrogen storage, distribution and fuel systems. According to the Council, hydrogen could account for almost 20% of total final energy consumed by 2050.”
“We want to jointly pursue our purpose of driving energy transformation together with other committed players to become even more powerful in reaching this goal.”
Dr. Kleschinski expects the momentum in hydrogen energy to only grow in the next five years, and at a rapid rate.
“The hydrogen market is moving at a fast speed so it’s challenging to predict the next few years. We are experiencing high activities in all segments of the hydrogen business and are currently involved in a number of hydrogen development projects. I believe that in five years’ time we see the serial production of hydrogen cylinders for FCEVs that we are currently developing under large OEM contracts.”
“In addition, we will see the development of the next generation of hydrogen cylinders. I also expect a strong market development in the heavy-duty truck and transit bus market, and we work hard to play a role in this market as well.”
“In hydrogen distribution I see that transported hydrogen used in mobility applications will take the lead from hydrogen transported as industrial gas. Especially heavy-duty mobility will be an enabler for hydrogen distribution on the road”
He continued, “In hydrogen distribution I see that transported hydrogen used in mobility applications will take the lead from hydrogen transported as industrial gas. Especially heavy-duty mobility will be an enabler for hydrogen distribution on the road. As the leading supplier for high volume hydrogen transport solutions, we envisage a significant market share in this arena too.”
Asked how Hexagon Purus will respond to this fast-paced market growth, Dr. Kleschinski enthused, “As this is how we see the future in expectation of this market development, we are currently making substantial organisational investments to further develop our leading hydrogen position to meet the strong growth that we are expecting over the next years.”
