Higher temperature electrolysis can reduce the cost of green hydrogen

Hydrox Holdings today said its membraneless alkaline DEFT technology has been identified by an international consortium of scientists studying temperature electrolysis.

It is well known that temperatures in excess of 100C are highly beneficial to electrolysis as the heat favourably impacts the reaction kinetics resulting in improved efficiencies and cost savings. The more heat the less electrical energy required.

Electricity consumption contributes to more than 70% of all operational expenses in electrolysis and with energy losses of between 40-50% due to waste heat in the conversion process, there is huge scope for improvement.

Scientists have for many years tried to increase the operating temperatures of conventional electrolysers to take advantage of the benefits attached to such higher temperatures, but unfortunately the membranes could not handle the higher heat and pressures and virtually all studies in this direction were abandoned.
