Hydrogen and carbon capture being explored to decarbonise mining activities

The combination of green hydrogen and carbon capture technologies to accelerate carbon-neutral mining activities is being explored by a new partnership.

Green hydrogen technology company Fusion Fuel Green and Spanish mining company Magnesitas De Rubia yesterday (9th March) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the effort that includes hydrogen-based mining solutions and hydrogen production technology.

As part of the hydrogen production effort, the partnership is planning to install up to 10,000 HEVO-SOLA units at Magnesitas’ site in Lugo, Spain, that will produce up to 20,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

A portion of the output from the units will be used to generate industrial heat in Magnesitas’ natural gas/hydrogen combi furnaces.  The reminder will be combined with 125’000 tons of CO2 captured by Magnesitas De Rubian to produce between 38’000 and 45’000 tons of synthetic fuels annually.
