Hydrogen emission data is ‘blind spot’ for industry’s decarbonisation potential


Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Chief Scientist, Dr Steven Hamburg, has said the NGO’s new industry hydrogen leakage project can deliver operational excellence, effective policy, public trust and hydrogen’s climate promise.

EDF will be working with Air Products, Shell, and TotalEnergies to measure hydrogen emissions at production plants, pipelines, refineries and refuelling stations at existing sites across Europe and North America.

Unveiling the project on stage at the World Hydrogen Summit, Hamburg warned that current data does not represent how hydrogen emissions could be reducing the energy carrier’s decarbonisation potential.

“The lack of empirical data is a blind spot. And the joint effort being announced today is designed to address this issue,” he said.
