Hydrogen fuel cell power plant planned in South Korea

Air Liquide, Lotte Chemical, and SK Gas will build a hydrogen fuel cell power plant in Ulsan, South Korea, as part of newly unveiled joint venture plans.

The trio last week (June 2) announced plans for the 500,000MWh/y plant, that marks just one of many South Korean-based hydrogen projects that are set to be carried out by the venture.

H2 View understands that SK Gas will supply by-product hydrogen to the new site and Lottee Chemical will supply raw materials and business-related sites.

An opening date for the plant has not yet been announced, however, once construction of the plant is complete, the venture is expected to also build hydrogen-powered charging stations across South Korea.

For this aspect of the project, Air Liquide brings a wealth of experience in hydrogen station development, as well as supply chain and distribution knowledge.

The announcement comes after the three companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to create hydrogen filling centres in the country, in May this year (2022).

Nicola Poariang, CEO of Air Liquide Korea, said, “We are very pleased to cooperate with Lotte Chemical and SK Gas, and we expect this joint partnership will greatly contribute to the development of South Korea’s sustainable hydrogen economy.”

Byung-seok Yoon, CEO of SK Gas, commented, “We expect that the establishment of this joint venture will serve as an important catalyst for revitalising the Korean hydrogen economy and contribute to the transition to a domestic hydrogen society in the future.”
