Hydrogen, oil and gas industry members push Senate to save 45V tax credit


More than 250 companies and organisations, including oil majors, hydrogen developers, and business chambers, have urged the US Senate to block a Republican-led attempt to gut the Section 45V hydrogen tax credit. They’ve warned that the move could hand the hydrogen race to China.

The tax and spending bill, led by President Trump under his “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” narrowly passed the House last month by a 215–214 party-line vote. It includes a motion to terminate the 45V credit for any hydrogen project that does not begin construction before December 31, 2025.

In a letter addressed to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Finance Chair Mike Crapo, the coalition called for extending the 45V “commence construction” deadline to at least December 31, 2029.

The letter highlighted that pulling support would hand global hydrogen leadership to China, which already “exceeds 60%” of global manufacturing capacity.
