Hydrogen Optimized has been boosted by nearly $5m of funding to advance the commercialisation of its electrolysis system.
A KEY DH Technologies subsidiary, the technology company is developing water electrolysis technology called RuggedCell which uses green electricity to produce green hydrogen and oxygen at a large scale.
The $4.8m grant from Sustainable Development Technology Canada will support the development of product system, helping it scale from 200MW to 400MW.
Welcoming the support, Andrew Stuart, Chair, President and CEO of KEY, said, “SDTC’s funding represents a major step toward realising our goal of providing industry-leading, cost-effective and highly efficient water electrolyser technology at scale.
“We thank SDTC for its vote of confidence in our company and technology, and for its support in accelerating our progress.
“Our goal is to be the world leader in the provision of large-scale green hydrogen production systems, which will assist major industries to significantly reduce their carbon emissions.”

The project builds upon a previously announced collaboration between Hydrogen Optimized and ABB to demonstrate the combined technological of each company for green hydrogen production.

Hydrogen Optimized was founded three years ago to advance large-scale green hydrogen production. We address the large end of the marketplace through our high current RUGGEDCELL™ water electrolysis technology. We recognized that there appeared to be a void in the market for a truly large-scale technology which can meet the need for 100s of MW production modules versus 10s of MWs.
Our approach is highly reliable industrial hydrogen generators which can obtain the economies of scale which the replication of smaller modules cannot. Every aspect of our design and approach is to ensure that we have an inherent low capital cost design and the $/MW of a project continuously reduces as the MW of the project scope increases. In addition, the RuggedCell™ design enables the use of low cost, scalable manufacturing technologies. Our focus is both a highly efficient and cost-effective water electrolysis solution as well as a solution that can be mass manufactured.
