Hystar: A future written in the stars

There’s a huge hydrogen vibe going on in Scandinavia and more specifically, Norway. Already home to several leaders in the hydrogen industry, since September 2020, it has also been the launchpad for an ambitious new innovator in the shape of Hystar.

Founded as a spin-off from SINTEF, one of the largest independent non-profit research institutes in Europe, Hystar is the brainchild of co-founders Alejandro Oyarce Barnett, Chief Technology Officer, and Magnus Thomassen, Chief Product Officer. The pair were colleagues at SINTEF and came up with a ‘game-changing’ concept for water electrolysis that would go on to pave the way for a potentially pivotal role in the transition to a hydrogen future.

When that concept was validated within the research institute at SINTEF and sparked interest with both the organisation and the Research Council of Norway, the ball was firmly rolling. Fellow co-founder Fredrik Mowill, CEO, was able to bring his entrepreneurial background in clean energy businesses to the project, and the start-up that is Hystar was born. Perhaps the critical juncture in any conversation around Hystar, however, is not where the company came from, but where it boldly aims to be; what it dares to bring to the market and in turn, society.
