Indian refineries plan $23bn in green hydrogen and ammonia investments


India is planning green hydrogen projects worth around ₹2 trillion ($23bn), led by its state-owned oil refineries.

Tenders to produce 42,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year have been floated by the refineries, with 128 more tenders expected to be issued based on the outcome of those tenders.

The Independent Commodity Intelligence Services (ICIS) highlighted that nine R&D or demo plants are under construction and four have been commissioned by state-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Gail India, Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL).
