Industry endorses COP29 Hydrogen Declaration

The Hydrogen Council and Hydrogen Europe have endorsed the COP29 Presidency’s Hydrogen Declaration of commitments to scaling up the clean energy carrier.

Backed by several UN bodies, the declaration is slated to build on COP28’s commitments to accelerate low-carbon hydrogen production, transition away from fossil fuels and triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Calling for stakeholders globally to scale up hydrogen by offering demand creation, standards and certification, finance, capacity building, trade, R&D and sustainability, the declaration launched ahead of COP is not part of official negotiations.

However, the COP29 Presidency sees it as a “vital tool” for driving progress.

Ivana Jemelkova, Hydrogen Council CEO, applauded the presidency for recognising the role of hydrogen in the energy transition and putting forward the declaration, which “calls for bold action on demand and inclusion of hydrogen in the 2025 submission of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).”

NDCs are seen as a central part of COP proceedings. Submitted to the UNFCCC every five years, they set out national climate action plans.

Highlighting significant growth in hydrogen over the past five years, Jemelkova, stressed, “To deliver our shared climate goals, however, we need to do more, faster. Today’s Hydrogen Declaration is a key step in that direction.”

Hydrogen Europe CEO, Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, described the declaration as a “historical step.”

“It highlights the urgent need for additional measures to affordably transport and store renewable energy after the previous COP’s pledge to triple renewables.”
