KRRI wants to launch a hydrogen train

Trains in South Korea could soon be powered by hydrogen thanks to a partnership between the Korean Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) and Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies.

The KRRI wants to launch a prototype hydrogen train in 2020 utilising a 400KW PEM fuel cell powertrain from Horizon.

The technology is being evaluated for full commercialisation in the South Korean train network.

The KRRI plan to put the hydrogen train through three to four years of extensive testing at their test facility in Osong, Chungbuk, to thoroughly validate the potential for hydrogen propulsion in the national rail system.
