Liebherr Mining, Engie looking at hydrogen to decarbonise mining sector

Swiss-based Liebherr Mining and Engie are looking into renewable hydrogen, and hydrogen derived fuels, in a bid to develop an integrated well-to-wheel solution for the mining industry as the sector looks to decarbonise.

Liebherr said it investigating future energy ecosystems to power its mobile and heavy-duty mining equipment.

Already offering nearly a full range of electric excavators and trolley equipped trucks, Liebherr has a clear roadmap to achieve low carbon solutions in 2022 for its entire truck and excavator product line, along with fossil fuel free solutions for most applications by 2030.

Together with energy firm Engie, which has a strong belief that hydrogen is one of the key solutions for a clean energy transition, the two companies will look at the cost and greenhouse gas emissions of the holistic well-to-wheel solution, supporting the selection, design and development of the right energy supply chain and zero emission mining equipment.
