Maersk and Hyundai explore SOFC potential

Shipping giant Maersk and South Korea multinational Hyundai are to undertake joint research into solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems as part of a collaborative decarbonisation push.

SOFCs are being courted more due to their potential to generate electricity efficiently and reduce emissions, and versatility, since they can operate on hydrogen, ammonia and natural gas.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two companies will seek to nail down the most efficient fuels for decarbonisation.

To date, methanol has been more in favour.
