MHI to investigate co-firing ammonia at coal-fired power plant in Thailand

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) is set to conduct a feasibility study for the introduction of ammonia co-firing at a coal-fired thermal power plant in Thailand, in pursuit of decarbonising power production with hydrogen-based fuels.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), MHI will investigate the feasibility of introducing ammonia at a plant operated by BLCP Power, a 50:50 joint venture between Banpu Power Public Company (BPP) and Electric Generating Public Company (EGCO).

H2 View understands, BLCP, MHI, Mitsubishi Corporation and JERA will jointly conduct studies and develop plans to see 20% ammonia co-firing at the 1,434MW power plant located in the Rayong province of Thailand, to reduce carbon emissions.

MHI with the support of Mitsubishi Power will conduct a study on the supply of ammonia burners, boiler facilities, and equipment necessary for ammonia co-firing, JERA will explore the procurement and transportation of ammonia.

Together, JERA and Mitsubishi Corporation have said they will investigate the port facilities and ammonia receiving and storage facilities required for the project.

The developments come after JERA and MHI in January 2022 confirmed they would work together to develop an ammonia single-fuel burner, suitable for coal-fired boilers.
