Mitsui OSK updates on hydrogen-powered passenger ship after year of service


Mitsui OSK Lines Group has released an update on Japan’s first hydrogen-powered passenger ship.

Hanaria features a hybrid system and can operate on hydrogen fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries and biodiesel.

The vessel cuts carbon emissions by about 55% compared with conventional diesel-fuelled ships. The company announced it started services using Hanaria from last April.

“The road to completing Hanaria was not an easy one,” said the company statement. “As there was no precedent to follow, the only way to proceed was to develop a method for supplying hydrogen [to ships].
