Nel joins Norwegian network to develop hydrogen megaprojects in China

As Norway continues to grow its hydrogen infrastructure, Nel ASA has joined a network of Norwegian technology companies aiming to take part in Chinese megaprojects.

Unveiled on Friday (April 29), the network will aim to integrate its vast knowledge in the hydrogen space to capitalise on the growing market in China.

Not only could this prove to be profitable and lucrative for the companies, but it could also rapidly reduce the carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions within China.

This expansion also supports Nel’s recent opening of the “world’s first” fully automated electrolyser production facility in Herøya, Norway.

The facility coming on-stream is something of a jewel in the crown for Nel, the famously purple-branded pure player in hydrogen solutions.

It’s been a project in-the-making for a number of years and it’s official opening on 20th April represents a long-awaited breakthrough for the company, bringing a current production capacity of 500MW into the fold.

But it’s also the numbers and potential that the plant brings to the long-term picture in green hydrogen that is so important.

Speaking on joining the hydrogen network, Jon André Løkke, CEO of Nel ASA, said, “The hydrogen market is developing extremely fast, and the geographical scope is broadening.

“In a few years we will probably see that some of the largest hydrogen projects are located in Asia, Latin-America, Australia and the Middle East. To be a partner in Nordic Industry Center can be valuable for us when approaching these important markets.”
