New Zealand to trial hydrogen trucks

Five hydrogen-powered trucks are set to be demonstrated in New Zealand after the project was backed today by the government.

Energy Minister Dr. Megan Woods said Hyundai Motors New Zealand had secured funding for the trucks under the Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund (LEVCF), which will contribute $3.7m to 22 low-emission transport projects.

Woods noted that the spread of projects showed the fund’s reach across the transport sector: “Demonstrating and proving the potential for electric and hydrogen heavy vehicles is important, as heavy freight has an outsized impact on transport emissions.”
