Project building hydrogen-powered cargo ship boosted by €8m

A groundbreaking project designing and constructing a new green hydrogen-powered ro-ro demonstration vessel has been boosted by €8m as the Norwegian Government announces a strengthened focus on development and commercialisation of hydrogen as a carbon-neutral fuel.

Comprising 14 European partners, the revolutionary HySHIP project will also establish a viable liquid green hydrogen supply chain and bunkering platform.

Once completed, the ship will be operated by Norwegian maritime industry group Wilhelmsen and will distribute liquid green hydrogen to hydrogen hubs along the Norwegian coast.

Expected to be operational in 2024, the project aims to lower the development and operational cost of a wider move to liquid green hydrogen for ship propulsion throughout Europe.
