Repsol produces hydrogen from biomethane at Cartagena plant


Repsol’s Cartagena plant in Spain has produced 6.5 tonnes of turquoise hydrogen from biomethane.

The Spanish oil giant is certified to include biomethane in its production processes “when market conditions are favourable.” Repsol said it will help stimulate demand for biomethane and strengthen the development of a market for the circular process.

Repsol produces hydrogen from biomethane as an alternative to natural gas, using existing reforming infrastructure. The biomethane itself is generated through anaerobic digestion of biodegradable organic materials, primarily domestic, industrial, and agricultural waste.
