RFNBO rules may undermine electrolysers’ role in grid flexibility: ENTSO-E
Electrolysers could be a key enabler of flexibility in Europe’s energy system, but current green hydrogen production rules restrict their ability to do so, according to a new report by Europe’s electricity system operator.
ENTSO-E’s latest publication said that electrolysers can offer flexibility in the electricity system by adjusting their consumption based on electricity prices and grid connections to balance and manage congestion.
The operator estimates that system-supporting electrolysers could provide up to 101GW of flexibility capacity by 2050 – yet there are no current mechanisms to support it.
It categorised electrolyser use into four operational modes: baseload, demand-driven, market price-driven, and system-supportive. Only the latter two provide significant grid value, but they are the least supported by existing regulations.
