RWE, Linde partner to create 200MW green hydrogen production capacity in Lingen, Germany

Germany continues to see its hydrogen economy expand today (Dec 20) with RWE partnering with Linde to develop a new 200MW electrolyser plant in Lingen.

In partnering with Linde to develop this project, the company will deliver two 100MW PEM electrolysers that will support RWE in its Growing Green strategy with aims to create at least 2GW of hydrogen generation capacity by 2030.

In addition to this, the companies will conduct the permit planning as part of the pre-project development phase.

The electrolysers will be powered using renewable offshore energy produced in the North Sea with the project anticipated to be able to produce vast amounts of green hydrogen to decarbonise domestic industries.

The 200MW plant is part of a wider aim to implement a 300MW electrolyser by 2026 at the Lingen location with plans to scale this to potentially 2GW by 2030.

Being developed as part of the GET H2 project, this development will, together with national and European partners, kick-start the creation of a cross-regional European hydrogen infrastructure and to develop a strong European hydrogen market.

Sopna Sury, Chief Operating Officer of Hydrogen at RWE, said, “By 2030, RWE aims to create 2 gigawatt of electrolyser capacity of its own in order to generate green hydrogen. Of the more than 30 hydrogen projects RWE is involved in, GET H2 in Lingen is by far the most advanced large-scale plant.

“The preselection of Linde as our technical provider for a substantial part of this project is an important milestone on the way to an investment decision.

“Being able to plan the technical details for the first two electrolyser units now means we can make a swift start on implementing the project if funding is awarded.

“We are pleased to be able to draw on Linde’s rich experience in planning complex technology projects on an industrial scale for this task.”
