Smoltek Hydrogen slashes iridium use by 95% in PEM electrodes
Sweden’s Smoltek Hydrogen claims to have achieved a 95% reduction in iridium use for PEM electrolyser electrodes, which it says could alleviate scaling bottlenecks and reduce costs.
The materials specialist announced that its porous transport electrode (PTE) with added nanostructure reduced iridium requirements from 2mg/cm² to just 0.1mg/cm² – an 80% to 95% reduction– while maintaining high performance.
Using a catalyst-coated substrate, where a metallic substrate is coated instead of a plastic membrane, Smoltek says the PTE proved its effectiveness through 1,000-hour testing with independent verification.
