Spanish consortium to research hydrogen injection in natural gas pipeline

A newly launched project based in Spain hopes to boost the safe injection of hydrogen in natural gas distribution infrastructures with new advanced technological solutions.

Led by natural gas distributor Nortegas, the H2SAREA project hopes that by injecting hydrogen into existing natural gas distribution networks it will help consolidate the role of hydrogen as a lever to decarbonise the economy.

In order to do this, Nortegas will research new technological solutions, equipment and components, which will allow the natural gas networks to be transformed to distribute hydrogen in different blending scenarios.

The aim is to establish and obtain the necessary technological solutions for the possible progressive transformation of the distribution network and uses with incremental hydrogen mixes in the natural gas network, until 100% hydrogen is achieved.
