Spotlight on… Johnson Matthey – Catalysing the transition to Net Zero

Founded in 1817, Johnson Matthey (JM) is a global leader in sustainable technologies, with a vision to make the world cleaner and healthier, today and for future generations. Almost 50 years ago JM pioneered the first commercial introduction of catalyst converters in the automotive industry and ever since, through technological step changes, has helped reduce transport emissions across the globe – preventing the emission of over 20 million tonnes of pollutants entering the atmosphere every year.

Today, JM is applying its expertise in complex chemistry, catalysis, process engineering and management of platinum group metals (PGM) to catalyse the Net Zero transition and, through the development of new solutions, is supporting the emerging hydrogen economy.

Hydrogen’s role as an energy store and carrier, its ability to be transformed into sustainable chemicals and fuels, and its use in hard-to-abate industries such as long-haul trucking and steel making, mean that governments are developing strategies, providing funding, and setting targets to drive low-carbon hydrogen production.

JM provides technologies across the hydrogen value chain, focussing on three main segments: energy, chemicals, and transport.
