SSE and Equinor’s Aldbrough hydrogen project secures planning consent
SSE Thermal and Equinor have secured planning consent for their Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder project in East Yorkshire, paving the way for hydrogen production and storage to begin by 2029.
Based at SSE and Equinor’s existing Aldbrough Gas Storage site in the Humber, the project will use a 35MW electrolyser to produce hydrogen, store it in a converted salt cavern, and generate green power via a 100% hydrogen-fired turbine to export green power back to the grid.
Sally O’Brien, Senior Project Manager for the Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder project, described the planning consent as “a big step towards the UK’s low-carbon future.”
